Volunteer Recognition Awards

Everyone appreciates a thank you for her/his volunteer efforts. This year GSUSA offers service units new ways to recognize local volunteers!  Also, the council level award applications may be completed entirely on-line beginning January 1, 2006.

Nomination Deadlines

The deadline for Council Level awards of Appreciation Pin, Honor Pin, and Thanks Badge I and II, and the Life Time Achievement Award  has passed.  Check back in January 2007.

For Service Unit level awards, each Service Unit sets its own award application deadlines, and Court of Awards locations and dates.

A Change from the Council Resource Guides:

Two new GSUSA awards are now available. The S.T.A.R. award is a way to thank short term volunteers. The Progressive Volunteer Award is designed to recognize longer-term volunteers. These were listed as Council-Level awards. These are now Service Unit Level awards. Please notify your volunteers about this change.


COUNCIL-LEVEL AWARDS


Appreciation Pin
: recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult volunteer or staff member who has provided outstanding service to at least one geographic area, service unit Appreciation Pinor program delivery audience. A nomination form is required, in addition two written endorsements are also required. The deadline for the 2006 Council Level awards has passed.


Honor Pin
:
recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult volunteer or staff member Honor Pinwho has provided outstanding service to at least two or more geographic areas, service units or program delivery audiences. A nomination form is required, in addition three written endorsements are also required. The deadline for the 2006 Council Level awards has passed.


Thanks Badge I:
the highest award in Girl Scouting recognizes service so Thanks Badge Isignificantly above and beyond the call of duty, and benefits the total council, that no other award would be appropriate. A nomination form is required, in addition four written endorsements are also required. The deadline for the 2006 Council Level awards has passed.


Thanks Badge II: the nominee has received the Thanks Badge I and continues to serve the council in the same high quality manner. A nomination form is required, in addition four written endorsements are also required.  The deadline for the 2006 Council Level awards has passed.

 

SERVICE UNIT LEVEL AWARDS


S.T.A.R. (Short-term as Requested) Volunteer Award
has three categories. Each service unit sets its own nomination and Court of Award deadlines. A nomination form is completed and returned to the service unit.

  • Community Participation – the volunteer provides a one-time or a one-day service for the service unit or council. Recognition: a thank you letter, to be presented to the volunteer and to the volunteer's employer, if desired.
     
  • Citizenship in Girl Scouting – the volunteer returns for a consecutive second and third round of service and provides support through two or three different short-term venues for the service unit or council. Recognition: a certificate may be presented for each round of service.
     
  • Social Responsibility in Girl Scouting – the volunteer recommits for a fourth round of short-term service and provides support to the service unit or council. Recognition: Volunteer Service Pin, to be presented in recognition of volunteer service. The pin has three levels available.


Progressive Volunteer Award
has six stages. A nomination form is available at www.gsccv.org, for service units. Criteria are as follows: the candidate is a registered Girl Scout and adheres to all policies and procedures of the Girl Scout organization, they have completed appropriate orientation and training for the volunteer position in each category, they are providing service in the Girl Scout organization at the local or national level. Candidates must complete the first year of service and recommit to a second year, volunteer activity must begin in the current or previous Girl Scout year.

  • Girl Scout Volunteer Achievement Award – is presented for the following: completion of the first year of troop or group leadership, completion of service on a task group, or completion of successful service on a board committee. Each of these must also include a recommitment to a second year of service in the same position.
     
  • Girl Scout Mentoring Award – the volunteer, who has gained sufficient skills and experience at this level, becomes a coach and/or mentor for a new volunteer. Recognition: a White Key is awarded and added to the chain, which is attached to the Girl Scout Volunteer Development Pin.
     
  • Girl Scout Volunteer Executive Award –is presented to a governance volunteer who has served in a leadership role at the national or council level. Recognition: a Black Key is awarded and added to the Girl Scout Volunteer Development Pin.
     
  • Girl Scout Volunteer Diversity Award – is presented to an individual that has increased membership in underrepresented Girl Scout Council of Cannon Valley populations, awareness and understanding by supporting the council goals. Recognition: a Gold Key is awarded and added to the Girl Scout Volunteer Development Pin.
     
  • Girl Scout Community Cultivation Award – is presented to an individual that has increased volunteer and girl membership that reflects that diversity within the council jurisdiction and has established effective partnerships that help achieve the council goals. Recognition: a Silver Key is awarded and added to the Girl Scout Volunteer Development Pin.
     
  • Girl Scout Fund Development Award – is presented to an individual that has helped reach the council's fund development goal by increasing their personal contributions and by increasing financial resources through securing major gifts, grants, and other means. Recognition: a Copper Key is awarded and added to the Girl Scout Volunteer Development Pin.


The Outstanding Leader Award
The Outstanding Leader Pin is awarded to a troop leader or assistant leader whose performance in working with girls is so outstanding that it merits recognition by the Service Unit. The candidate must have completed new volunteer orientation and level training, and s/he should have demonstrated competence in girl-adult partnership, communication, membership development, pluralism (diversity) and the delivery of the Girl Scout program.

The Outstanding Volunteer Award
The Outstanding Volunteer Pin is awarded to a volunteer in a position other than (or in addition to) leader whose service benefits the entire Service Unit in a way that is beyond expectations for the position held. Examples include but are not limited to: a recruiter who has retained or increased adult or girl membership, an event chair who has managed several successful events (especially with increased girl planning and involvement), or a person who has significantly enhanced Girl Scouting's image in the community.
