Strong female role models will be honored as 2006 Women of Distinction by the Girl Scout Council of Cannon Valley (GSCCV). A committee of Girl Scouts ranging in age from 11-20 studied the nominations from many communities to select the seven honorees.
In the category of Women Promoting Diversity , Maria Aguilar from LeSueur is being honored for her contributions to multicultural understanding and the value of diversity through her work as the Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for LeSueur-Henderson Public Schools.
Sara DuChene Boyd of Faribault will receive the Women Strengthening Community award for her efforts organizing several events and committees at Fourth Avenue Methodist Church to benefit people in need.
The Women Preparing Women award is given to Diane Hagen , Parenting Coordinator at the Minnesota Correctional Facility – Shakopee, for her guidance in family support programming for incarcerated women with children.
Paula Patton, Publisher & Editor of the Faribault Daily News is receiving the Women in Leadership award for being a visionary, fair-minded leader who has improved relations with businesses.
The Women in Education award goes to Marilynn Neuville, a dedicated teacher in Northfield who instills confidence, character and life-skills in her students.
Melissa Peterson is receiving the Women in Philanthropy award for inspiring people in her community of Janesville to give of their time to provide enjoyable holiday celebrations for the needy.
The Women in Government honoree is Jessica Peterson of Northfield for her incredible work ethic, leadership, dedication and open mindedness as a Rice County Commissioner.
This is the 11 th Annual Women of Distinction Gala for GSCCV and will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2005 in the Sun Room of Buntrock Commons at St. Olaf College. Coleen Rowley, Time Magazine's Woman of the Year will be the keynote speaker and each of the Women of Distinction will share brief stories of their outstanding contributions related to their category of recognition.
The evening event will begin with a silent auction and reception at 5:00 with the speaker and honorees and continue with a Northwoods buffet dinner of chicken with wild rice and baked walleye served at 5:45 while the instrumental group, Flaribonba entertains. Funds raised from this gala will help to provide programming and opportunities to girls throughout the 26 communities of the council jurisdiction.
